A Cultural Celebration of Día de Los Muertos
San Jose, CA – September 21 2024– The Mexican Heritage Plaza (La Plaza) will host the 5th Annual Avenida de Altares (Avenue of the Altars), a free, immersive and uniquely San Jose cultural event that celebrates Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This beloved community tradition invites families and visitors to take part in honoring ancestors, experiencing rich Mexican traditions, and celebrating the joys of life through art, music, and food.
This year, Avenida de Altares continues La Plaza’s 25th-anniversary celebration with an unforgettable experience that spans from the intersection of Alum Rock Avenue and King Road all the way to the Mexico Bakery. The event’s centerpiece is the carefully curated altar walk, featuring altars created by local artists and community groups. These vibrant, impactful altars will be displayed within La Plaza’s walls and along Alum Rock Avenue. They offer a stunning tribute to those who have passed and an invitation to reflect on the beauty and significance of Día de Los Muertos.
After exploring Avenida de Altares, guests are invited into La Plaza’s festive grounds for a variety of activities that bring the spirit of the celebration to life. From tarot readings to local artisans selling unique handmade creations, there’s something for everyone. Visitors will also find picturesque cemetery installations, which offer beautiful decor and stunning photo opportunities, and honor the tradition of remembering loved ones with reverence and joy.
The event is free to the public and offers a packed schedule of entertainment and activities:
