Marcus Shelby Orchestra at the Presidio Theatre

June 8, 2025  at 2 p.m.

Bay Area bassist, composer, educator, and Artistic Director of the Healdsburg Jazz Festival Marcus Shelby will bring his 15-piece Orchestra for the first Big Band Sunday. For this performance, Shelby will present his original suite “Black Ball: The Negro Leagues and the Blues” that celebrates the history and legacy of Black baseball through songs, video, theatrics, singers, dancers, and clowns.

The music honors baseball legends such as Satchel Paige, Josh Gipson, Jackie Robinson, Orlando Cepeda, Willie Mays, and more. The music captures the sound of the game using blues, ballads, and swing to bring to life strikeouts, arguments with umpires, and home runs.

Featuring special guests Martin Luther McCoy and Paige Mayes.

Symphony San Jose Closes Season with Fabulous “ESPAÑA”

June 7 & 8, 2025

España — a musical trip through Spain led by Spanish conductor Jose Luis Gomez and featuring Gabriela Lena Frank’s Escaramuza, and Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez performed by Spanish guitarist Rafael Aguirre. It is Rodrigo’s best-known work and it has cemented his reputation as one of Spain’s most significant composers.

We’ll also view the Iberian Peninsula through the lens of two “visiting” composers, Ravel (France) and Rimsky-Korsakov (Russia) and hear how each portrayed Spanish music through their distinct writing styles.

Pre-concert events include Spanish tapas and flamenco dance shows. Ole! (Pre-concert festivities occur one hour prior to the concert.) Sip on refreshing sangria and immerse yourself in the vibrant and passionate atmosphere of Spain. Wow! Symphony San Jose knows how to party while presenting a phenomenal repertoire of beautiful music. Bravo!
