Teatro Visión Presents No Llegamos Aquí Solos, a love letter to the East Side San José community

The world premiere of the new play created by Santa Clara County’ s Poet Laureate, in collaboration with community members in East Side San José

Josimar Reyes

San José, CA Jan. 29, 2026 – Teatro Visión is pleased to present its newest production, No Llegamos Aquí Solos by Yosimar Reyes. This performance powerfully weaves music, poetry, and community input, with the overall effect being an inspiring play that is rooted in community power and civic engagement. This production is a love letter to the immigrant and undocumented communities of East Side San José.

The play follows Ignacio who is preparing for Mamá Doña’s (his grandma) 85th birthday celebration. However, he has decided that today is the day he is called to organize his community in preparation for an ICE raid. When his neighbors in their apartment complex don’t quite agree with his methods, Ignacio learns an important lesson about caring for his beloved community.

Hailing from East San Jose by way of Guerrero, Mexico, Reyes quickly made a name for himself at the tender age of sixteen, exploding onto local Bay Area stages and captivating his audiences with deeply moving spoken word performances. Reyes’ repertoire has since evolved to include nationally-acclaimed keynotes, writing workshops, and his one-man show, Prieto, a coming-of-age story that explores subjects like migration, sexuality, and socio-economic struggle, all while empowering his audiences to tap into their own creative potential.

In addition to being the first-ever undocumented poet to achieve Santa Clara County Poet Laureate status, Reyes was chosen to be a 2024 Creative Ambassador by the City of San Jose, The Advocate named him one of “13 LGBT Latinos Changing the World,” and Remezcla included him on their list of “10 Up And Coming Latinx Poets You Need To Know.” Since 2024, over the course of a community story-gathering project, Teatro Visión and Yosimar Reyes designed No Llegamos Aquí Solos to share stories rooted in the lives of our East San José neighbors.

Blending Yosimar’s deep knowledge of the Mayfair community in which he was raised, his honest and emotive poetic voice, and Teatro Visión’s extensive experience withcommunity-engaged theater practices, the project empowers the community in East San José and fosters civic participation.

Three Decades of Celebrating Culture & Nurturing Community No Llegamos Aquí Solos asks a profound question: “What does it take for a community to take care of each other?” Reyes decided to write this play due to the current surrounding political environment with the intention of the play being a love letter to the people that inspired him to become the poet he is today. He asserts that this production is not an explainer on immigration for outside audiences. “I want my community to come into the theater and feel seen and heard.

I hope people will feel like, for the first time, their struggle and strive is being celebrated.” Says Reyes. “This is a love letter to the people that inspired me to become the poet I am today. I hope one of the biggest aspects people take away is ‘How can I be a better neighbor to the immigrants in my community?’

Teatro Visión Artistic Director Rodrigo García said of the project, “This new work seeks to shed light onto the stories of the people who continue to live and thrive in a community that is threatened to be displaced by gentrification. The high cost of living and the ravenous modernity

cast a shadow on our most vulnerable communities and threaten to erase their very existence and legacy. “Teatro Visión’s commitment to create theater to inspire people to feel, think, and act, is guiding our approach to this new work in which artist Yosimar Reyes will be engaging with the community of East San José to create a theater piece that aims to elevate those stories and present them in a more dignified way using the power of storytelling, poetry, and humor.”
