Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine will be administered in Santa Clara County once supplies arrive

Santa Clara, County, CA July 20, 2022–  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) approved the use of the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine on July 19, 2022, and the County of Santa Clara will begin the process of acquiring the vaccine.

The Novavax vaccine will become a viable first series option for adults 18 and older in Santa Clara County, but it will not be a booster option at this time based on FDA approval.

Unlike the currently available Pfizer and Moderna vaccines that use an mRNA-based approach to developing immunity, Novavax uses traditional protein-based technology. Both methods are very safe and very effective at preventing serious illness and death from COVID-19.

“Adding the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine to our inventory adds another viable option to keep individuals, friends, families, and the general public protected against severe disease from COVID-19,” said Dr. Jennifer Tong, Associate Chief Medical Officer for Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. “Once the County has received and distributed the vaccine to our locations, its use can begin.”

The newly approved Novavax vaccine can be stored at standard refrigeration temperatures between 36 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit. It can also serve as an alternative to the small percentage of people who are unable to receive an initial series with an mRNA vaccine due to a history of allergic reactions.

COVID-19 cases are still at a high plateau in Santa Clara County and current numbers do not include the multitude of positive results from in-home tests. Wastewater levels are still significantly higher than during the Delta surge at this point last summer. Additionally, there are still anywhere from six to nine deaths each week with COVID-19 in the county.

Everyone is encouraged to check with their primary physician about receiving the initial COVID-19 vaccination series or a booster. Those without a primary healthcare provider or who are having difficulty finding an appointment can go throughwww.sccfreevax.org for an appointment.
